In the third round, which was also the last match she played before this tournament, Stearns proved to be no match for Mirra Andreeva who ended her run 6-1, 6-1.
Earlier in the season, the American had lost in the first round of two of the tournaments and made it to the second round in three others.

Gracheva Makes it Through as Lucky Loser
Varvara Gracheva hasn’t had much of a start to the season with just one main draw win under her belt over four tournaments.
Having lost in her opener at the Hobart International to kick-start her season, Gracheva overcame Caty McNally in the Australian Open to reach round two.
From that point onward, Gracheva’s struggles have only increased with the French 24-year-old losing in the second round in Melbourne, then falling to Stearns in Cluj-Napoca and failing to qualify for this tournament as a direct qualifier.
She was beaten by Aoi Ito in the second qualifier but some late withdrawals have allowed her a chance to get past Stearns here. Gracheva will need a big turnaround.
