Ben Shelton v David Goffin Head to Head
Shelton and Goffin have never faced off before this.
Shelton Stumbles Past Cobolli
It was expected to be a routine opening win for Ben Shelton when he took on Flavio Cobolli but his opponent forced him into a corner on multiple occasions in their opening encounter.
Shelton was needed on court for over two hours before he edged out Cobolli 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4) to reach the second round.
Cobolli saved four break-points in the fourth game of the opening set but that was the only time he did that in the set while in the second set, Shelton fell 0-3 behind at one stage.
The American broke back to level things out 3-3 but had to then save a couple of set-points before coming through in the ensuing tie-breaker.
This follows Shelton’s second round exit at the Dallas Open having earlier made the semifinal at the Australian Open as well.

Goffin Finally Wins a Round
In a match between two struggling players, it was David Goffin who finally earned himself a win and reached the second round.
Goffin had entered the tournament with probably very basic goals – try and win a round for the first time this season. Because in the five tournaments that the Belgian had featured in before this in 2025, he had lost in the first round at each of them.
Making matters worse for Goffin was the fact that he had won just one set all year and lost to Rinky Hijikata already in 2025 – winning just three games in that match in Adelaide.
Which is why, for Goffin to come back and grab a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Hijikata would have provided oodles of relief more than any other emotion. It could help Goffin turn his season around even if he doesn’t do too much of note here.
Shelton v Goffin Prediction
Shelton has been in some curious form post Australian Open and we wouldn’t be surprised if he struggles yet again as he takes on someone who has just won his first match of the year. He should still come through but not before getting squeezed.
Shelton v Goffin Tips
- Shelton to win: 3/10
- Three sets in the match: 6/5
