Tomas Machac v Learner Tien Preview
Head-to-Head: This is the first meeting between between Machac and Tien.
For the second match in a row, Tomas Machac looked like he was in a bit of a test from his opponent but in the end came away a winner. If in the first round, it was Jakub Mensik who took Machac to the third set, this time around it was the turn of Daniel Altmaier to stretch his opponent in the opening set.
In the end, the world number 25 came away a 7-6 (3), 6-1 winner, needing an hour and 48 minutes to clinch the victory.
This was after Altmaier had broken Machac once in the first set to go 4-2 up before the Czech player came back to push it into a tie-breaker.
This was Machac’s ninth victory of the season to go with four defeats but he will now be hoping for his third successive win of the year for the first time in 2025.
He will have to take down the giant-killer Learner Tien if he wants to get a hat-trick of wins.
Because the American qualifier, who had earlier already defeated Daniil Medvedev at the Australian Open, shocked the world and Alexander Zverev with his second round victory.
Tien, having earlier overcome Federico Gomez and Dusan Lajovic to make the main draw, and then having beaten Cameron Norrie in the first round here, stunned Zverev 6-3, 6-4.
He might not be the bookmakers’ favourite here but he does have a lot going in his favour.
Machac v Tien prediction: Three sets in the match: 6/5

Brandon Nakashima v David Goffin Preview
Head-to-Head: There have been two previous meetings between these two players – one in Basel in 2022 and another one at the Challenger circuit the following year. Nakashima has won both.
Brandon Nakashima was advantaged by the strange bug that seemed to have hit the competition as his opponent Holger Rune retired from their second round match.
Leading 3-0 in the first set, Nakashima saw Rune walk up to the net to offer a handshake, allowing the American an easy passage to the quarterfinal – his second successive such entry following the Delray Beach Open where he had defeated Reilly Opelka on his way.
Having edged out Benjamin Bonzi in the first round, Nakashima will now face David Goffin for a place in the last four after the Belgian got the better of Ben Shelton in another shock result.
Goffin had entered the tournament on the back of a 0-5 win-loss record for the season and for him to even beaten Rinky Hijikata in the first round looked to have been a bit of an achievement.
For him to have then beaten Shelton 7-6 (3), 6-3, much to the chagrin of his opponent would probably have counted as the upset of the tournament had so many seeded players not lost in the second round.
Either ways, both players now have a solid chance of earning themselves an elusive semifinal berth.
Nakashima v Goffin prediction: Nakashima to win: 1/2
