Saville Benefits from Badosa’s Back
Daria Saville was an overwhelming second favourite coming into her quarterfinal against Paula Badosa and it looked like her campaign was about to get over too when she was soundly beaten in the first set.
The Aussie came back in the second set to lead 5-3 but by then Badosa had already started struggling with back issues and eventually she retired from the encounter to concede the semifinal berth to Saville.
Badosa had been making waves her performances after returning from a chronic back trouble and it looked like all was well with her health situation before this occurred.
On the other hand, Saville might not have enjoyed the manner in which she won but the victory will help her gain some vital ranking points and push her closer towards breaking into the top 100.
This was after Saville was forced to come through the qualifiers here and then defeated Marta Kostyuk and Anhelina Kalinina in two upset results.
Those were also Saville’s first two main draw wins of the season and she will now have a good chance to make it four in a row along with her first WTA final since August 2022.

Arango Stuns Sramkova
Before the start of this tournament, Emiliana Arango’s career-best ranking was 109th in the world.
Wins in two qualifying rounds and three main draw matches have not only taken her to maiden WTA semifinals but it would also mean that when the rankings are updated next week, Arango would have broken into the top 100 for the first time in her career.
In her quarterfinals, Arango came back from a set down to crush Sramkova in the next two, winning 5-7, 6-3, 6-0.
Till last week, Arango hadn’t played in the main draw of an event at this level but was coming off a superb performance in a WTA 125 event in Cancun.
She had won the title there with four of her five wins in that tournament having come against bookmakers’ favourites in that encounter.
