Smith Comes Through the Qualifiers
The 22-year-old Colton Smith hit a career-high ATP ranking of 259th earlier this year following a stunning performance on the Challenger circuit.
He won his maiden Challenger title in Cleveland on the back of wins over Ethan Quinn and JJ Wolf and while he was ousted in the first round of the San Diego Challenger after that, Smith looks to have carried that confidence into this competition as well.
Getting his first shot at participating in the qualifiers of this event in Indian Wells, Smith surprised Fabio Fognini and Pavel Kotov in the two rounds to make it to the Indian Wells Masters main draw.
As a result Smith will not just be making his ATP 1000 debut but also playing his first ever ATP tour level match.
