As a part of the ATP and WTA 1000 series, the Miami Open is one of the biggest tennis tournaments outside of the four Grand Slams.
And the 2025 tournament will have Jannik Sinner and Danielle Collins as defending champions at the Miami Open as its men’s and women’s singles defending champions.
It will be the 40th time that the Miami Open will be played this year having started in 1985.
Miami Open 2025 Tournament Preview
This will be updated as we get closer to the start of the 2025 Miami Open. Below is the preview to the 2024 edition.
The Sunshine Double moves to Miami as the top men’s and women’s players in the world take to court for the ATP & WTA 1000 event to be played there.
On the men’s side, it will be Daniil Medvedev who will look to defend his title even as we will have a different women’s singles winner from last time with the absence of Petra Kvitova.
Speaking of absence, and the biggest news in the lead-up to the Miami Open 2024 draw was the withdrawal of Novak Djokovic, who had earlier lost in the third round of the Indian Wells Masters.
The other big news is the return of Simona Halep who makes it back to the tennis circuit following the overturning of a doping-related ban with the Court of Arbitration for Sport allowing her a return to tennis.
Also joining the women’s draw is Aryna Sabalenka, who was sent packing early by Emma Navarro in Indian Wells but as things stand, there are question-marks over her participation following the passing away of her boyfriend Konstantin Koltov.
US Open champion Cori Gauff will hope she can one better than her semifinal appearance the previous week. The American is expected to face the Indian Wells Open winner Swiatek in the semifinal.
Elena Rybakina had to pull out of the Indian Wells Open because of a gastrointestinal issue but she makes it back too, as does Jessica Pegula who has struggled to get going in recent times. Marketa Vondrousova, who has a Grand Slam title under her belt too, won’t be participating this time.
Among the other senior pros are Naomi Osaka, Caroline Wozniacki, Angelique Kerber and Elina Svitolina.
With Djokovic ruling himself out of this competition, Alcaraz will start off as the top seed and will have Australian Open winner Jannik Sinner for company as the second seed.
Alcaraz and Sinner had clashed in the last four stage at Indian Wells and it will be interesting to see if a final awaits them.
That will be challenged by the defending champion Medvedev, who put up a fight in the Indian Wells Open title-decider before capitulating in the second set.

What did the Miami Open 2024 Draw Look Like?
Women’s Singles Draw
The 96-player singles draw has all the 32 seeded players get a bye into the second round.
In the opening round, some of the top players in action include Sloane Stephens, who faces Angelique Kerber in what could be an interesting match-up. Donna Vekic faces Karolina Pliskova as well while Naomi Osaka shouldn’t have a lot of problems against Elisabetta Cocciaetto in her opener.
Former US Open winner Emma Raducanu will also take to court as she faces Xiyu Wang while Venus Williams has a wildcard and takes on Diana Shnaider.
In what could be an exciting bottom section of the first round draw, Simona Halep returns to face Paula Badosa while Caroline Wozniacki plays Clara Burel. Americans Sofia Kenin and Danielle Collins will begin their campaigns against qualifiers.
Top seeded Swiatek should not have much of a problem early as she faces the winner of the match between Camila Giorgi and Magdalena Frech, but a potential match-up against Linda Noskova in the third round could be an interesting proposition.
Jessica Pegula, who has either Marie Bouzkova or Lin Zhu as her second round opponent and could then play Leylah Fernandez, Emma Navarro or Jasmine Paolini over the next two rounds, could be a potential opponent for Swiatek in the quarterfinals.
Third seeded Gauff should not have a lot of trouble through to the quarterfinal where she might face Ons Jabeur. Jabeur hasn’t been in the best of forms and has a slightly tricky second round match against the winner of the Erika Andreeva v Elina Avanesyan encounter.
Anastasia Potapova, Sorana Cirstea and Daria Kasatkina could also be stumbling blocks for Jabeur before that quarterfinal.
In the bottom half of the Miami Open women’s draw, Indian Wells Open runner-up Maria Sakkari could face Anna Blinkova in the second round, Dayana Yastremska in the third and one of Jelena Ostapenko or Anna Kalinskaya in the fourth.
If she does make it to the quarterfinal, Elena Rybakina could be awaiting her. To get there, Rybakina could need to overcome Elise Mertens, Madison Keys or Veronika Kudermetova and if she shows decent form, that shouldn’t be beyond her.
The seventh section of the draw could spring up a few surprises with Qinwen Zheng, Victoria Azarenka, Katie Boulter and Beatriz Haddad Maia, all in with a chance of making it to the quarterfinals. Peyton Stearns could turn out to the dark horse here.
Second seeded Aryna Sabalenka* has an interesting second round opponent in the form of the winner between Paula Badosa and Simona Halep, while Anhelina Kalinina could be her third round opponent.
With Sabalenka having struggled in Indian Wells, it will be interesting to see if she can get past Ludmilla Samsonova or Barbora Krejcikova to make the last eight where she will face the winner of the aforementioned seventh section of the draw.
* we are still awaiting confirmation over Sabalenka’s participation in the tournament following the tragic news that her boyfriend has passed away in Miami.
Men’s Singles Draw
Like in the women’s singles draw, the top 32 players in the men’s draw also have a first round bye.
Among those featuring in the opening round action, Gael Monfils could be one of those to watch out after a solid performance at the Indian Wells Masters. He faces Dusan Lajovic in his opener and should not have a lot of trouble against Borna Coric in his second round match either.
Where he could meet his match is in the third round as he possibly takes on Carlos Alcaraz. Alcaraz will need to overcome the winner of the Aleksandar Vukic vs Roberto Carballes Baena opener and could face Lorenzo Musetti or Ben Shelton in the fourth round.
The second section of the men’s draw has the eighth seeded Hubert Hurkacz who needs to get some of his old form back. He will prepare to take on Sebastian Korda in round three if both win their openers and has either Grigor Dimitrov or Adrian Mannarino waiting for him in the fourth.
Alexander Zverev is the top-ranked player in the third section and could take on Felix Auger-Aliassime in the second round. Christopher Eubanks and Karen Khachanov could possibly be his next two opponents heading into the quarterfinal stage.
In-form Alex de Minaur should not have a lot of trouble getting past the winner of the Alexandre Muller-Soon-woo Kwon opener and then might face Jan-Lennard Struff in the third.
His real test could come in the fourth round when he faces one of Holger Rune or Jiri Lehecka, with the winner of this section setting up a potentially mouth-watering quarterfinal against Zverev.
In the bottom half, Jannik Sinner should have no difficulties in either round two or three, but Tommy Paul could prove to be a hindrance in the fourth. If he comes through that, a quarterfinal match against Andrey Rublev could await him.
Rublev might have Tomas Machac first up before a third round encounter against one of Andy Murray, Matteo Berrettini or Tomas Martin Etcheverry. He shouldn’t have any problems against any of them with Alexander Bublik or Stefanos Tsitipas facing him next.
Indian Wells Open runner-up Daniil Medvedev has Cameron Norrie in his path as a potential third round opponent but shouldn’t be troubled by either Ugo Humbert or Sebastian Baez in the fourth.
Casper Ruud could await Medvedev in the quarterfinal but for that, the former world number two will need to get past the like of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Nicolas Jarry/Taylor Fritz.

What Happened in the 2024 Edition of the Miami Open?
Danielle Collins came away a shock winner of the women’s singles draw at the 2024 Miami Open as she defeated Elena Rybakina in straight sets in the final. She won 7-5, 6-3.
By winning this title, Collins became the first unseeded player to win this competition in 19 years. Interestingly, she had come into the tournament ranked 53rd in the world.
The withdrawal of Petra Kvitova as she went on a maternity leave left the women’s draw without its defending champion.
Aryna Sabalenka suffered an early jolt when her former boyfriend died of suicide and she would crash out of the tournament in the third round.
World number one Iga Swiatek didn’t last too much longer as Ekaterina Alexandrova knocked her out in the fourth while Coco Gauff and Ons Jabeur made the fourth and second round respectively only.
The men’s section of the draw saw the withdrawal of Novak Djokovic, leaving Carlos Alcaraz as the top seed in the tournament. He was, however, unable to make it the Sunshine Double as he fell to Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets, later claiming he felt like a 13-year-old against the Bulgarian.
Instead it was the Australian Open winner Jannik Sinner who went on to claim the trophy by overcoming Dimitrov 6-3, 6-1 in the final.
The only time Sinner had been tested in the entire tournament was in the third round when Tallon Griekspoor took him to three sets. He would drop six games in the quarterfinals to Tomas Machac, and then blow Daniil Medvedev off the court in the semifinal, winning 6-3, 6-1.
Sinner climbed up to number two on the ATP Rankings chart in becoming the first from Italy to clinch this title.
What Happened in the 2023 Edition of the Miami Open?
The withdrawal of Iga Swiatek before the start of the women’s Miami Open 2023 meant it was a rather open draw which saw Aryna Sabalenka make the quarterfinals and Jessica Pegular enter the semifinals.
They did not go any further and Petra Kvitova went on to win the 2023 Miami Open title by defeating the in-form Elena Rybakina 7-6 (14), 6-2 in the title-decider.
In the men’s section of the draw, Jannik Sinner showed what he is capable of by defeating the top seeded Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinal but he then went down to Daniil Medvedev in the final. Medvedev won the title 7-5, 6-3.
This was Medvedev’s fifth title in an ATP 1000 tournament.
This was after Novak Djokovic was forced to withdraw from the tournament because of his anti vaccination stance.
