What Happened in the 2025 Edition of the WTA Brisbane International?
Aryna Sabalenka won her second title at the Brisbane International when she defeated surprise finalist Polina Kudermetova in the final. Sabalenka, who had finished runner-up in the 2024 WTA Brisbane came back from a set down to grab the title 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Other than losing that set in the final, Sabalenka registered four successive straight-set wins to reach the final, another show of the dominance she has exerted all of the previous season.
On the other hand, Kudermetova made it to the main draw as a qualifier, and then upset a whole host of players on her way to the final.
The Russian defeated Peyton Stearns in her opener, then sent the 13th seeded Liudmilla Samsonova packing in the second, overcame another Russian Daria Kasatkina in the third before beating Ashlyn Krueger and Anhelina Kalinina in the next two rounds to make the final.
What Happened in the 2024 Edition of the WTA Brisbane International?
Elena Rybakina continued with her winning form from the previous couple of seasons as she clinched the Brisbane International tournament in 2024 as well, defeating the top seeded Aryna Sabalenka 6-0, 6-3.
In what was her sixth tournament victory at this level, Rybakina did not drop a single set in the entire tournament. The most games she lost in a set in the competition were four in the first set she featured in Olivia Gadecki in the second round.
The Kazakh and second seed in the competition went on to then overcome Elise Mertens, saw Anastasia Potapova hobble off in the second set of the quarterfinals before routing Linda Noskova in the semis.
Sabalenka herself was in excellent form going into the final, having not lost a set but Rybakina proved to be too good for her.
