Liudmilla Samsonova v Polina Kudermetova Head to Head
There have been two previous meetings between these two players and both have won one. At the Rosmalen Open of 2023, it was Samsonova who had triumphed in straight sets before Kudermetova stunned her in Brisbane earlier this year.
Samsonova Coming off Shock Shock Australian Open Loss
While Liudmilla Samsonova’s start to the season was a bit of a surprise when she fell to Polina Kudermetova in her very first match of the year – in Brisbane – she looked to have shrugged that off with a solid performance in Adelaide.
Samsonova defeated Marie Bouzkova, Belinda Bencic and Emma Navarro in successive rounds to reach the semifinals there before the eventual winner Madison Keys ended her run.
She then eased to a victory over Kamilla Rakhimova in the Australian Open opener but was stunned in the second round by Olga Danilovic. The fact that she lost 6-1, 6-2 made it all the more surprising.
What can Samsonova now do in a tournament that had helped her get out of the rut last year – she was 0-3 at the start of the 2024 season before reaching the semifinal here and getting some momentum to her season.

Kudermetova Hoping to Recreate Brisbane Magic
Polina Kudermetova has a 5-3 record for the season with all of those five wins having come at the Brisbane International.
Starting out as a qualifier in that competition, Polina eased past Xinyu Wang in her opener there, overcame Samsonova in the second round, and then defeated Daria Kasatkina, Anhelina Kalinina and Ashlyn Krueger in the next three matches to enter the final.
Things have gone a tad pear-shaped for her since then.
She did put up a fight against Aryna Sabalenka in that title-decider before losing the match and then won three qualifiers to make the Australian Open main draw but is on a three-match losing streak.
Following that Sabalenka defeat, Kudermetova has lost to Magdalena Frech and Kimberly Birrell in the following two tournaments and some might wonder if that Brisbane performance was a flash in the pan.
