Liudmilla Samsonova v Lulu Sun Head to Head
Samsonova and Sun have never faced off in a competitive match before this.
Samsonova Hoping a Repeat of Adelaide Showing
Liudmilla Samsonova has featured in four hardcourt tournaments this season and in only one of them she has managed to perform to the kind of levels she would have liked.
That came at the Adelaide International where she defeated Marie Bouzkova, Belinda Bencic and Emma Navarro, three high-quality players to make the semifinals.
And it took the eventual Australian Open champion Madison Keys to take her out, but not before the American had some help from an abdominal injury that hit Samsonova.
Samsonova came back from that injury at the season’s first major but lost in the second round to Olga Danilovic and then lost to Veronika Kudermetova in the Abu Dhabi opener.
Can she shrug off her form and fitness concerns here, at a tournament she has featured five times but never won a main draw round?

Sun 1-5 for the Season
When Lulu Sun romped to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Caroline Garcia in the first round of the Abu Dhabi Open last week, it would have come as a huge relief and a hope for the start of something fresh.
Because Sun had entered that match as a second favourite, having lost four matches in a row to kick-start the season.
Making matters worse for Sun was the fact that those defeats hadn’t come at the hands of top 10 players or those of very high current pedigree – Rebecca Marino, Sofia Kenin, Danka Kovinic and Sara Sorribes Tormo, who are in their own career struggles at the moment.
Unfortunately for Sun, she followed that win over Garcia with a shoddy performance against Leylah Fernandez, losing 6-0, 6-3 to the Canadian.
Things could get darn tough for her here against a top-20 player.
Samsonova v Sun Prediction
There are two players here, both at varying levels of poor momentums. Samsonova will hold the edge here and should come through against the struggling Sun, probably in straight sets too.
Samsonova v Sun Tips
- Samsonova to win: 3/10
- Samsonova to win in straight sets: 5/6
