Anna Kalinskaya v Moyuka Uchijima Head to Head
Kalinskaya and Uchijima have never faced off before this.
Kalinskaya Struggles Continue
Fitness and form are often inter-related, especially in an individual sport like tennis and Anna Kalinskaya is bearing the brunt of the same at the moment.
There have been at least three instances of injuries and fitness-related issues for Kalinskaya that have made it difficult for her, forcing her to either pull out of matches or retire mid-match.
And what’s that done is to put her in the middle of a downward spiral as far as her results her concerned. Kalinskaya is now on a four-match losing streak and her ranking her gone down from her career-best 11th in the world to her current 33rd.
With a fourth round appearance in this tournament last year, another early loss here could push her down even further. And that’s the added pressure that Kalinskaya will face coming into this encounter.
Can the Russian shrug off her losing form against a player who has never been in the top 50 of the rankings before?
Uchijima Makes Winning Debut
Featuring in the Miami Open for the first time in her career, Moyuka Uchijima ran off to a straight-set win over Suzan Lamens in her opening round.
Uchijima, who had begun the previous season ranked 199th in the world, ended 2024 at 62nd. And she has now risen to 53rd, which is one away from her career-best ranking.
Her opening round win over Lamens should bring her some more points which could help her get closer to her dream of breaking into the top 50. And that’s where she will hold the edge over her Russian opponent.
Despite being ranked well below her in the WTA Rankings, Uchijima is a player on the rise unlike Kalinskaya whose stocks have gone just one way since the start of the season – downward.
Rather interestingly, Uchijima hasn’t won successive main draw matches in any of the tournaments she has participated in this year, which could bring her opponent into this.
