Clara Tauson v Camila Osorio Preview
Head-to-Head: Their only previous meeting came in 2021 in Charleston and Osorio had won that clay-court encounter.
The kind of form that Clara Tauson has been all season it looks like it would take something extraordinary to take her down. This has proved by her performances all season which has included a title win at the Hobart International and her run-up to the final of the WTA Dubai recently.
In Dubai, Tauson defeated the likes of Rebecca Sramkova, Elina Svitolina, Linda Noskova, Karolina Muchova and above all, the world number one Aryna Sabalenka to enter the title-decider. It took the might of Mirra Andreeva to stop her.
And while Tauson would be disappointed with that defeat, she would also be excited to have hit a career-best ranking of 21st in the world. A few good performances here could help her break into the top 20 for the first time, especially given she had not made the main draw of this event last year.
She takes on surprise entrant Camila Osorio in the second round after the Colombian shocked Naomi Osaka in her opener.
In what was described by Osaka as her worst performance ever, Osorio came away a 6-4, 6-4 winner to reach the second of this tournament for the first time in her career.
Osorio, who had last played at the Singapore Open in January and made the quarterfinals there, made it a first round victory at four successive tournaments this season when she came through in her hour and a half long encounter.
Things might not be the same for her when she takes on the in-form Tauson here.
Tauson v Osorio prediction: Tauson to win in straight sets: 10/11

Jelena Ostapenko v Xinyu Wang Preview
Head-to-Head: They have faced off once before this, in St Petersburg in 2022 and Ostapenko had won that opening round match in straight sets.
Jelena Ostapenko had made a wretched start to the season when she crashed out of her opening round at three of the fourth tournaments she played. And in the fourth, in Adelaide, Ostapenko made the second round at the expense of Magdalena Frech but then lost to Madison Keys.
Which is probably why not too much was expected out of her when she took to court for the WTA 1000 event in Doha.
Ostapenko is made of sterner stuff though and time after time we have seen her come back from hopeless performances. A French Open winner early in her career, she has done well on a regular basis in hardcourt and grass court competitions and that was on display yet again.
The Latvian number one cruised into the final in Doha with wins over Liudmilla Samsonova, Jasmine Paolini, Ons Jabeur and even Iga Swiatek – whom she has defeated multiple times in the past. And while Ostapenko lost to Amanda Anisimova in the title-decider she looked to have done her job.
She now takes on an out-of-sorts Xinyu Wang who downed Mayar Sherif in the first round. That was a result that went on expected lines given the struggles that Sherif has faced outside of clay.
The issue for Wang has been her results other than a semifinal appearance in Singapore have been rather underwhelming. In the five tournaments she has featured in outside of the Singapore Open, Wang has not made second round.
And against a player of the pedigree of Ostapenko, that could be a big concern.
Ostapenko v Wang prediction: Ostapenko to win in straight sets: 6/5
