Diana Shnaider v Katerina Siniakova Preview
Head-to-Head: Shnaider and Siniakova have never faced off before this.
Ranked 13th in the world, Shnaider was expected to go deep into the tournament when she began her season at the Brisbane International last week. She was a 1/6 favourite to do that going her opening round match against Anhelina Kalinina but failed to find the kind of rhythm that had seen her win four WTA titles last year.
Yes, you read that right – Shnaider had won tournaments at Hua Hin, Bad Homburg, Budapest and Hong Kong in 2024, across all the surfaces, making her one of the most dangerous players to watch out this season.
Instead she was packed off by Kalinina in three sets in that opening round.
She now has the chance to win her first match of the season when she takes on the 46th-ranked Katerina Siniakova who is in her first tournament of the season.
Siniakova was forced to feature in the qualifiers and while she did well to beat Cristina Bucsa and Ashlyn Krueger there, facing Shnaider will be a different cup of tea.
Shnaider v Siniakova prediction: Shnaider to win: 1/2
Linda Noskova v Maria Sakkari Preview
Head-to-Head: Last year, these two players had met in Doha in what was their only meeting. Noskova had won a fighting match in three sets.
It’s a match-up between the 30th-ranked Linda Noskova and Maria Sakkari who is just two spots behind her.
Despite that, and despite the fact that Sakkari has a decent record in hardcourt competitions, the bookmakers have installed Noskova as a 1/2 favourite to win this and they aren’t too off the mark.
That’s a lot to do with Sakkari’s poor form more than anything else.
In fact there’s a genuine worry if Sakkari has it in her to turn things around in her career following a season like 2024 in which she fell from her ninth rank to 32nd in the world.
Add that to the fact that Sakkari lost both her United Cup matches – to Jessica Bouzas Maneiro and Elena Rybakina – and then fell in the qualifiers of this competition before scraping through as a lucky loser and you know why Noskova is a solid favourite here.
Noskova v Sakkari prediction: Noskova to win: 1/2
Liudmilla Samsonova v Marie Bouzkova Preview
Head-to-Head: There have been four previous meetings between these two players and both have won two apiece. Their latest match came at the US Open last year where Samsonova edged out Bouzkova in the second round.
Following an underwhelming season in 2024 in which Samsonova did win a title in Rosmalen but wasn’t consistent enough to come close to her career-best ranking of 12th, she started off her campaign for the season in Brisbane last week.
Samsonova was expected to come through easily against fellow Russian Polina Kudermetova.
Little would she have been expecting Polina to come back from being a set down to crash into Samsonova’s party in that second round match before going through to the final of that tournament.
Samsonova will now hope she can win her first match of the season in the lead-up to the Australian Open but in the 42nd-ranked Marie Bouzkova she has a stiff opponent here.
Bouzkova also featured in that same Brisbane International and defeated Victoria Azarenka and Jelena Ostapenko on her way to the quarterfinals before losing to the eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka.
Here in Adelaide, she was forced to feature in the qualifiers but overcame both her opponents in comeback-from-behind three-setters to clinch a place in the main draw.
We believe if Samsonova can get rid of her complacency and rustiness, she should come through.
Samsonova v Bouzkova prediction: Samsonova to win: 11/10
Marta Kostyuk v Ashlyn Krueger Preview
Head-to-Head: There have been no previous meetings between these two.
Marta Kostyuk had begun the season ranked 18th in the world, close to her career-best ranking of 16th and had she gone all the way in Brisbane there was every chance she could break into the top 15.
Unfortunately for Kostyuk, forget doing that, she was sent packing in the second round itself by Yue Yuan, who was 8/5 entering that encounter.
She now faces Ashlyn Krueger in her opener here who did so much better in that same tournament, winning three rounds which included a victory over Anna Kalinskaya in the second. It took Polina Kudermetova to end her journey in the last eight stage.
Krueger was then knocked out of the qualifiers of this competition by Katerina Siniakova before she made the main draw as a lucky loser.
Where does that leave us? With the bookmakers undecided and offering 9/10 for both the players.
We think this could turn out to be a one-sided match instead and aiming for the games market makes more sense than anything.
Kostyuk v Krueger prediction: Under 22.5 games in the match: 8/11
