Sebastian Korda v Lukas Klein Preview
Head-to-Head: Korda and Klein have never faced off in a competitive match before this.
Following his withdrawal from the Brisbane International, Sebastian Korda took to court in Adelaide and did well to reach the final.
Following a first round bye, he defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Miomir Kecmanovic and got a walkover from Thanasi Kokkinakis to make it to the title-decider where he took on Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Auger-Aliassime was stretched, but in the end, Korda was unable to get that final push and he lost in three.
Still, Korda is a good hardcourt player and looks to have done enough in Australia to merit an easy opening win against Lukas Klein.
Klein tried to qualify for the Brisbane International in the first week of the season but was knocked out by Li Tu. Not too many would have expected the 145th-ranked player to then win three in a row to enter the main draw here but Klein proved to be the surprise package in that regard.
Still, for a player who has never been ranked better than 109th in the world, a first round win against the 22nd-ranked Korda looks to be a bridge too far.
Korda v Klein prediction: Korda to win in straight sets: 2/1
Taro Daniel v Tristan Schoolkate Preview
Head-to-Head: These two have faced off once before and it was Schoolkate who downed Daniel in the first round of the US Open last year after coming back from being two sets down.
It’s been a rather poor start to the season for Taro Daniel, who is right now ranked 84th in the world.
The Japanese player was forced to play in a Challenger competition in Canberra and lost his opener and then fell in straight sets to Manuel Guinard in the Adelaide qualifiers.
While he might be facing a player who has never been ranked better than 167th on the ATP charts, there seems to be a huge difference between the way they are playing.
Tristan Schoolkate might have lost two of the three matches he’s played this season and won no main draw match but he has very much looked the part – something that cannot be said about Daniel.
Add that to the manner that the Aussie took down Daniel last year, it could well be a good chance for Schoolkate to win this.
Daniel v Schoolkate prediction: Schoolkate to win: 1/1
Liudmilla Samsonova v Kamilla Rakhimova Preview
Head-to-Head: They had first met in Moscow in a qualifier in 2019 where Samsonova had won before Rakhimova made it 1-1 in Bad Homburg in 2022.
Samsonova might have been in a bit of a shock when she ended the first match of the season this year. She wouldn’t have expected to lose to someone ranked outside the 100 but the world number 22 went down to Polina Kudermetova in three sets in Brisbane.
She returned well though, clinching wins over Marie Bouzkova, Belinda Bencic and Emma Navarro on her way to making it to the semifinals. While Samsonova lost to Madison Keys there, she would be reasonably pleased with her effort heading into the season’s first major.
Kamilla Rakhimova has edged to her career-best ranking of 60th in the world but her start to the season has been anything but satisfactory.
She was taken apart by Suzan Lamens in the first round of the Brisbane International and then forced to enter the qualifiers of the Adelaide International, Samsonova won just four games in her defeat to Xinyu Wang.
With just one main draw win at the Australian Open under her belt in her career and with form against her, Samsonova might need to overturn a lot to get past her fellow Russian here.
Samsonova v Rakhimova prediction: Samsonova to win in straight sets: 13/19
Danielle Collins v Daria Snigur Preview
Head-to-Head: Collins and Snigur have never faced off in a competitive match before this.
Danielle Collins was on the verging from competitive with the 2024 season being her last. Personal life took a turn and Collins has opted to carry on playing tennis for now.
She did not have the greatest of starts to the season though.
Featuring in the Adelaide International, Collins fell in straight sets to Ons Jabeur, a far cry from the time when she had won the Miami Open title less than 12 months ago.
There would have been obvious rustiness and the American now gets a chance to overcome that when she faces the 139th-ranked Daria Snigur.
Snigur did not make much of an impression when she featured in the Canberra ITF competition, losing her opener. She thenproceeded to outlast all her qualifying opponents including Rebeka Masarova and make the main draw.
Can she make things difficult for Collins though, a players ranked more than 120 places ahead of her?
Collins v Snigur prediction: Collins to win in straight sets: 1/1
