Ons Jabeur v Wakana Sonobe Head to Head
Jabeur and Sonobe have never faced off in a competitive match before this.
Jabeur Made to Work by Ostapenko
Jelena Ostapenko hasn’t had the best of starts to the season and Ons Jabeur took advantage of that lack of momentum by clinching a first round victory over her Latvian opponent.
Coming into the encounter as an 11/20 favourite, Jabeur was made to work hard by Ostapenko but won some crucial stages in the match to enter the second round.
In a match lasting an hour and 48 minutes, Jabeur clinched a 7-6 (4), 7-5 win, making it her seventh victory of the season spread across four tournaments.
Earlier in the season, Jabeur had made the quarterfinal at the Brisbane International while also entering the third round at the Australian Open.

Sonobe Wins Maiden Match on WTA Debut
Wakana Sonobe turned 17 less than a month ago and made her WTA debut in this competition, making it to the main draw with wins over Hailey Baptiste and Cristina Bucsa.
While she won both those matches in straight sets, one would have thought things would be slightly different against China’s Yue Yuan who is 55th in the world.
Yuan tried her best, even saved 11 break-points in the encounter but Sonobe kept attacking her serve and managed to get the better of it on four occasions. And with five aces and an 81% first serve winning ratio, she proved to be a hard nut to crack as well.
In the end, Sonobe registered her first ever WTA victory with a 6-4, 6-3 scoreline – her third successive straight-set win in the competition.
She now enters the big league, what with playing an opponent who is 16 years her senior and has Grand Slam finals under her belt.
Jabeur v Sonobe Prediction
While Jabeur is 1/4 to win here, we are very fascinated by what Sonobe has done so far and we think she could test Jabeur too. The one challenge for Sonobe is her lack of experience playing so many matches at the highest level in such little time.
