With that, Bencic has taken a step closer to what she had done in this competition in 2023 – won the title.

Lucky Loser Kudermetova Scrapes Past Samsonova
Veronika Kudermetova was probably on her way back to the next tournament after she lost to Sofia Kenin in the qualifiers. As luck would have it, her sister Polina opted out of the competition and she made it through instead.
Mentally, she might have even been packing up when she came into the tournament as a lucky loser and lost the first set of her opening round match against Liudmilla Samsonova.
As things turned out, Kudermetova was able to turn things around drastically and find a way to surprise her fellow Russian opponent.
The world number 52 still needed a tie-breaker in the final set after having saved a match-point as well, to make it through to the second round.
