Arthur Fils v Daniel Altmaier Head to Head
Rather interestingly this will be their sixth meeting at the highest level with their first one having come less than 15 months ago!
Fils leads 3-2 with wins in Basel, Barcelona and Auckland last year. Altmaier defeated the Frenchman in the 2023 Paris Masters and the Madrid Masters last year.
Fils Taken to Three Sets by Lestienne
Constant Lestienne fought tooth and nail in the first set of his opening round encounter against Arthur Fils before the Frenchman found his rhythm and finished off the encounter in an easy two sets.
After Fils lost the opening set in a tie-breaker in 61 minutes, his recovery in the next two was a very straightforward one as he needed a mere 69 more minutes to clinch the win.
This followed a Davis Cup win for Fils against Thiago Seyboth Wild in a rather controversial encounter and a third round appearance at the Australian Open.
Fils, who has never taken part in this tournament before, is currently at his career-best ranking of 19th and could break into the top 15 if he goes on to win the title here. That would be motivation enough as he takes to court for this second round match.

Altmaier Shocks Kovacevic
In his fifth tournament of the season, Daniel Altmaier hadn’t done much of note all year with a second round appearance at the Australian Open being his only main draw win.
There had been two first round losses and another qualifier ouster for Altmaier.
And even here, in Rotterdam, his campaign seemed to have gotten over when he fell to a straight-set loss to Constant Lestienne in the qualifiers. He was then roped into the main draw as a lucky loser in place of Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard but things looked to be going against him again.
In a mere 24 minutes, Altmaier had lost the first set to Aleksandar Kovacevic with two earlier breaks. Where he turned things around in the second set was when he found a way to hang in there with his serving.
Suddenly Kovacevic started to find things difficult and he failed to serve to stay in the second set at 4-5.
Something similar repeated itself in the final set when Altmaier held on to his serve every single time while breaking his opponent just once – in the eighth game.
Can he now dish out something similar against Fils?
Fils v Altmaier Prediction
Fils starts out a 1/4 favourite against the lucky loser and while Altmaier has come off a shock win, it could have been down to the lack of preparation for Kovacevic with a last minute withdrawal of his original opponent. Fils shouldn’t have much of an issue here.
