Anhelina Kalinina v Rebecca Sramkova Head to Head
While they had faced off on the ITF circuit in 2018 and Kalinina had won that one, their only meeting at this level came last year in Beijing and it was Sramkova who had clinched an easy first round win.
Kalinina Makes Cluj-Napoca Quarterfinals
Anhelina Kalinina was a semifinalist at the Brisbane International, a tournament in which she had defeated Diana Shnaider and Yue Yuan on her way to the last four.
From that point onward, Kalinina went on to lose three matches in a row – to Polina Kalinina in Brisbane, Ons Jabeur at the Australian Open and Clara Tauson in Linz.
The last two of those were difficult opponents to face up to, especially given their current record and Kalinina wasn’t quite able to get through them, making it three losses in a row.
Which is why her quarterfinal appearance at Cluj-Napoca will come as a bit of a relief but not as much as she would have liked. That’s to do with the fact that she was edged out of that match Aliaksandra Sasnovich, a player who had entered the match as a 13/10 underdog.
Kalinina will now hope not to repeat that post-Brisbane showing here too.

Sramkova 2-5 for the Season
It’s no shame losing to Iga Swiatek and going by current form, even to Belinda Bencic. Those were two of Rebecca Sramkova’s opponents this year whom she wasn’t able to defeat.
However, three other losses came to Anastasia Potapova, McCartney Kessler and Elina Avanesyan, making it a bit of a question-mark for Sramkova’s form.
Especially with Sramkova having entered the season on the back of a title win on the WTA circuit last year.
Sramkova will be on her debut here in Qatar and that could make things even more challenging for her but having had a solid hardcourt record in her career, it could even things off.
Kalinina v Sramkova Prediction
Not much between them with neither of them actually starting out as a favourite. Backing Kalinina here to clinch this in three given how much of a spark she shows every now and then, much like she had in Brisbane last month.
Kalinina v Sramkova Tips
- Kalinina to win: 10/11
