Daria Kasatkina had entered the Abu Dhabi Open last week on the back of a strong showing at the Australian Open, having reached the fourth round there.
She had lost to Emma Navarro in that match there but not before she had put up a strong fight with the third set going to 7-5 in favour of her opponent.

Kudermetova Enters as a Lucky Loser
Polina Kudermetova will know she needs to do a lot better than she has to prove her Brisbane International performance was no flash in the pan.
She had kick-started her season in Brisbane as a qualifier and on her way to making the final, Kudermetova had defeated Liudmilla Samsonova, Kasatkina, Ashlyn Krueger and Anhelina Kalinina before a fighting three-setter against Aryna Sabalenka ended in a low.
Since then, however, Kudermetova has suffered a first round loss at the Australian Open – albeit after winning three qualifying rounds – an opening setback against Kimberly Birrell at the Singapore Open and now a second qualifying defeat at Doha.
That she went down 6-3, 6-2 to Alycia Parks is a pointer in the direction of the need to become more consistent between tournaments.
