Francisco Cerundolo v Luciano Darderi Preview
Head-to-Head: The only time they played before this was at the 2024 Houston Open and Darderi had edged out Cerundolo in three thrilling sets.
Francisco Cerundolo loves his time on clay obviously but he has also done his bit on surfaces other than red dirt. Which is why he would be a tad underwhelmed by his performance in the Australian swing where he managed two wins and an equal number of defeats.
Once ranked 19th in the world, Cerundolo has also seen a bit of a tumble as he looks to avoid falling outside the top 30. He has made the final here in 2021 but it’s been a bit of a surprise that he hasn’t done too well post that.
A couple of quarterfinals are all that Cerundolo has managed.
On the other hand, Luciano Darderi has fallen to 59th in the world and this South American swing couldn’t have come sooner. Following back to back opening round losses at Hong Kong and Auckland he was forced to retire from his opener at the Australian Open.
If fit, he could give Cerundolo a bit of a fight but in the end, his opponent could prove to be too good here.
Cerundolo v Darderi prediction: Cerundolo to win: 1/3
Corentin Moutet v Jaume Munar Preview
Head-to-Head: They have played once on the Challenger circuit and a second time in the qualifiers of the 2024 Paris Masters and both times it was Moutet who won.
While that head to head points to Corentin Moutet having the advantage, Jaume Munar’s form has been something to behold more recently.
He started the season in Hong Kong where he made the semifinals with a shock win over Lorenzo Musetti while in Dallas Munar was in the last four again, with a victory over Ben Shelton this time.
And this is to go with the fact that Munar has been known to do well on clay – 16 of his 17 lower level titles have been on that surface!
Munar takes on Corentin Moutet whose only appearance this season came at the Australian Open. He did well with wins over Alexei Popyrin and Mitchell Krueger but other than that he hasn’t been around.
That could be to do with fitness-related concerns and it could add to the test he faces against the in-form Munar. We got to back the Spaniard here.
Moutet v Munar prediction: Munar to win: 4/6
Nicolas Jarry v Diego Schwartzman Preview
Head-to-Head: There have six meetings previously between these two and Schwartzman leads 4-2. On clay, it’s been 2-1 in favour of Schwartzman with their last match having come in Shanghai in 2023.
Diego Schwartzman bids adieu to competitive tennis with his appearance in this tournament with the Argentine having last played at the US Open last year.
He did feature in a Challenger tournament in Rosario before this as a way to get some practice but was knocked out in the very first round.
And Schwartzman now faces one of the toughest challenges he could have imagined in his farewell tournament, a player who was ranked 16th not so long ago and comes into this having made the final of the Argentina Open last year.
Nicolas Jarry featured in Brisbane and Australian Open and finished on a win-loss of 2-2 before flying back for the South American swing. He will not only start a favourite but also one to win it easily if he can keep the emotions out of this.
Backing Jarry to end Schwartzman’s career here.
Jarry v Schwartzman prediction: Jarry to win in straight sets: 5/6
Tomas Martin Etcheverry v Joao Fonseca Preview
Head-to-Head: World number 44 Etcheverry and the 99th-ranked Fonseca have never faced off before this.
Tomas Martin Etcheverry has had an interesting start to the season. He has featured in four tournaments and at each one of them, the Argentine has won and lost one match.
This includes the United Cup and Davis Cup to go with the Adelaide International and Australian Open.
That been said he will now hope to get a better return on his favourite surface clay, where he has won all eight of his lower level competitions.
In Joao Fonseca he has an opponent who made a name earlier this season by stunning Andrey Rublev in the first round of the Australian Open after starting out as a qualifier.
As a result of that and a title win at the Canberra Challenger, he broke into the top 100 but will now play on clay. Interestingly, all his three titles including two on the Challenger circuit and one Next Gen Finals have come in hardcourt competitions but he is no mug on clay either.
Given his confidence, he could give Etcheverry a bit of a working over but the Argentine should still clinch this.
Etcheverry v Fonseca prediction: Etcheverry to win: 1/1
