Kei Nishikori v Mackenzie McDonald Head to Head
There have been two meetings between them before this at the highest level and it’s 1-1 on head to head. Both came in 2021 with McDonald winning in Washington while Nishikori responded with a victory at the US Open.
Nishikori Hoping to Recapture Hong Kong Form
Kei Nishikori has made a decent comeback to the top level of tennis having been out of action for a great part of 2020 and then again in 2023.
In fact, having started out 2024 outside the top 350, he ended the year just outside the top 100 and resumed in 2025 with a bang.
The former world number four made it to the final at the Hong Kong Open, which was his first tournament of the season and then the second round at the Australian Open. He finished the Davis Cup tie against Great Britain 1-1 while getting knocked out in his Dallas opener by Tomas Machac.
Nishikori will now hope to do a tad better than what has been the case recently as he looks to go deep here. He has a bit out of sort Mackenzie McDonald up against him right now.

McDonald Hasn’t Win a Main Draw Match in a While
The last time Mackenzie McDonald won a match in the main draw of a tournament at this level was at the Atlanta Open last year. It’s been nearly seven months since that happened.
In the interim, the American has featured in multiple Challengers in hardcourt competitions and won a title and was a finalist at another last year.
This year, McDonald made the semifinal of a Challenger event in Oeiras but other than that, things have been a struggle for him. Which is why, the former top 40 player has fallen to 123rd on the ATP Rankings.
He has a wildcard for this tournament and while it’s not like Nishikori is at the peak of his own prowess too, McDonald will know he needs to do a lot better than he has in recent times to get the better of him.
Nishikori v McDonald Prediction
Nishikori is an 11/20 favourite in this one and given his form and the run he had made in Hong Kong, we will have to pick him as our winner for this. McDonald could try and push this into a third but that’s about as far as it could go.
Nishikori v McDonald Tips
- Nishikori to win: 11/20
