Ekaterina Alexandrova v Elise Mertens Head to Head
There have been three previous meetings between these two players and Alexandrova leads 2-1. Alexandrova won at the 2019 Rosmalen and 2021 Tokyo Olympics while Mertens’ only win came in Linz in 2020.
Alexandrova Upsets World Number One
In what was the upset of the tournament, the in-form Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova registered a comeback win over Aryna Sabalenka to seal her place in the third round.
With Alexandrova having won three of her seven meetings against Sabalenka, she knew she had proven to be a thorn in her opponent’s flesh in the past.
So when Alexandrova lost in the first set, she knew she could still put up a challenge and very soon had done enough to take the match into a decider.
Sabalenka was up a break on two occasions in the final set only for the Russian to break her and get back on serve at 4-4. Soon, it went into a tie-breaker in which Alexandrova began to expand her lead, going up 4-1 and while she frittered away two match-points, her win came off her third.
Alexandrova had entered the match with a Linz Open title under her belt and a straight-set win in the first round over Emma Raducanu.

Mertens Tames Bucsa
Having had the luxury of Clara Tauson retiring after the first set of her first round match, Elise Mertens pulled off an equally straightforward straight-set win over Cristina Bucsa in the second.
Mertens needed an hour and 33 minutes on court to win 6-2, 6-3 and make it to the round of 16 here for the first time since 2022. She earned 18 break-points in the encounter and broke her opponent five times.
A title winner here in 2019, Mertens extended her winning streak to seven matches after having won the Singapore Open a week before this competition.
What that means is that two players with long, unbeaten streaks will be facing off in this third round.
