Matteo Berrettini v Christopher O’Connell Head to Head
Their only previous meeting came in Shanghai last year with Berrettini winning in two tie-breakers.
Berrettini Sends Monfils Packing
Gael Monfils has had an excellent start to the season but having opted to be slightly picky about the number of tournaments he’s participating in, it was always going to be a difficult job getting back to the courts.
Especially when he was drawn Matteo Berrettini, a player who has recently begun to re-discover his touch.
And that’s exactly what happened with the 1/2 favourite Berrettini living up to those odds and clinching a straightforward opening round victory.
Berrettini was on court for an hour and 24 minutes in which he grabbed his second round spot with a 7-5, 6-4 win. He was broken twice in the first set but that was in response to his own breaking of his opponent’s serve before he clinched the win with a third break of serve in the set.
He added one more in the second set to complete the victory following on from his Doha quarterfinal appearance.

O’Connell Benefits from Dimitrov Fitness Concerns
For the third time this season, Grigor Dimitrov suffered from an injury that forced him to retire from his match against Christopher O’Connell.
Facing the sixth seeded Dimitrov in his opener, O’Connell raced off to a first set bagel before his opponent opted to throw in the towel. What that meant was that O’Connell had made it to the second round for the third time this season.
It follows his second round appearance in Doha last week where he had begun as a qualifier and another second round showing in Adelaide.
The last time O’Connell won back to back matches in a tournament was late last year in Belgrade but even that was his first such occurrence since the US Open in 2024.
Berrettini v O’Connell Predictions
Berrettini’s in a great rhythm and playing against someone who has been struggling beyond his openers, he will be a huge favourite to gobble this up.
