Ajla Tomljanovic got her bearings right when she took on the 3/5 favourite Katie Volynets in her first round encounter.
Having lost in the first round at both, the Adelaide International and Singapore Open and won just a round at the Australian Open, things hadn’t been looking too good for Tomljanovic in 2025.

Burrage Ends Kvitova’s Comeback
Petra Kvitova was returning to action after being away for a while being on maternity leave. Jodie Burrage might have gone into the encounter as a favourite as a result of that but one doesn’t write someone like Kvitova off like that anyway.
And that’s exactly what happened when the two met in the first round of the tournament with Kvitova grabbing the first set before Burrage came back to take advantage of her opponent’s tiredness and won the next two.
Burrage won 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in nearly two and a half hours to register her third main draw win of the year.
Having almost decided to retire last year following a sleuth of injuries, Burrage came back this season to clinch her opener at the Auckland Open and then defeated Leolia Jeanjean in her opener at the Australian Open.
