Maria Wins the Opener Again
Tatjana Maria has been in a reasonable touch this season with a title win at the ITF level and opening round wins at the Australian Open, Singapore Open and now here in Austin.
Having come into this tournament on the back of a first round loss at the WTA 125 competition in Cancun, Maria was pushed to a third set by Anna Bondar but managed to come through in a match lasting over two hours.

Maria dropped her serve four times in the encounter but got the better of her opponent’s serve on six occasions and will now hope she can get past Blinkova to make it two in two for the first time since she made the final of the Guadalajara Open in September last year.

Blinkova in a Comeback over Uchijima
Anna Blinkova has been one of the more consistent players ranked outside the top 50 this season. She had featured in five tournaments this season before coming into this one and won the opening round at each one of them.
That record was in a danger of getting broken as Moyuka Uchijima grabbed the first set of her first round encounter with Blinkova before the Russian came back and clinched a three-set win.
In a match lasting an hour and 49 minutes, Blinkova looked to be in trouble when she lost her serve three times in the first set and was broken in the second set as well after having drawn first blood there.
Once she managed to break Uchijima for the second time, Blinkova grabbed the set and then bagelled her opponent in the third to advance to the round two.
