Pegula Has an Easy Opener
Jessica Pegula might not have been in the smoothest of form in 2025 but there was going to be no other winner in her opener against Arantxa Rus.
That Rus had to retire from their encounter in the second set was incidental but Pegula had already grabbed the first set by then and was leading 3-2 when her opponent had to call it off.

Parrizas Diaz Spoils Rapolu’s Debut
It was Malaika Rapolu’s WTA debut but Nuria Parrizas Diaz was having none of it as she cruised to a straight-set win over her American wild-card opponent.
In a match that went on for an hour and a half, Parrizas Diaz won 6-2, 6-4 to reach the second round of a tournament for the first time this season at this level.
Having been knocked out of the openers at the Hobart International and Australian Open and then losing in the qualifiers of the WTA Linz, Parrizas Diaz took advantage of her inexperienced opponent’s nerves in the first set.
She broke Rapolu twice in the opening set while saving three break-points of her own. In the second set, Parrizas Diaz was down a break on two occasions but came back both times before breaking the American as she served to stay in the match at 4-5.
It will be chalk and cheese as far as the quality of opponents goes when Parrizas Diaz takes to court for her second round match.
