Mayar Sherif v Xinyu Wang Head to Head
There have been two previous meetings, both of which came in outdoor hardcourt events. Sherif won the first in Monterrey in 2023 before Wang levelled things out at the Hua Hing Open last season.
Sherif Coming off a Retirement in Merida
Mayar Sherif was down a set and 0-3 in the second in her first round match at the Merida Open against Francesca Jones when she was forced to retire from her match.
Her immediate health would be of concern obviously but for now it looks like she is fit again and will be featuring in this competition.
The other question, an equally important one, is what can she do with her form. How can, the former world number 31, turn that around to find herself a way to win a round.
Because in the five matches Sherif has played this season, she has won just one set. That’s right, five matches played, five matches lost – that’s her record for the year. A turnaround is needed but the clay-court specialist might need to wait out another month for that.

Wang Stalled Her Struggles in Singapore
If you take Xinyu Wang’s performance at the Singapore Open out of her season’s showings, she is left with not too much to show for the year.
There were first round losses at the Brisbane International, Adelaide International and then at the Australian Open before Wang finally got moving in Singapore. Wins over Rebecca Marino, Maya Joint and Jil Teichmann took her to the semifinal where her campaign finally ended.
Unfortunately for Wang things went back to her old self in the following two tournaments. She was bumped out of the WTA Doha in the first round by Elina Avanesyan before losing to Alycia Parks in her Dubai opener as well.
Wang’s only plus coming into this encounter is that her opponent has had an equally woeful, if not worse start to the season and her performances in hardcourt competitions over the years haven’t been as strong as clay anyway.
Sherif v Wang Predictions
Wang is 1/5 to win this and rightfully an overwhelming favourite here, probably a favourite to grab this in straight sets as well.
Sherif v Wang Tips
- Wang to win in straight sets: 3/5
