Fernandez, who had entered the tournament as the eighth seed made the quarter-finals by beating Sun 6-0, 6-3 in a mere 73 minutes.
Despite facing seven aces from Sun, Fernandez was able to break her Kiwi opponent four times in the encounter, from the 12 opportunities she got.
This follows another straight-set win in the first round for Fernandez after she had needed two tie-breakers to get past Moyuka Uchijima.

Krueger Shocks Kasatkina
Ashlyn Krueger overturned the 3/5 odds on offer for a win for Daria Kasatkina to come back from behind and clinch a three-set victory.
Krueger, who had made the quarterfinals at both, the Brisbane International and in Adelaide (having entered there as a qualifier), looked to be at sea at the beginning of the encounter as she lost her serve on four successive occasions.
Out of nowhere, however, she broke Kasatkina in the very first game of the second set and although she dropped her serve three more times, Krueger managed to hold on to it when she served at 6-5.
They traded breaks in the first two games of the third set too before a confident Krueger forged ahead in the seventh game. She missed out on five match-points on Kasatkina’s serve before serving to love in the next game to seal her quarterfinal berth.
