The three main courts in use at the Australian Open, Rod Laver Arena, John Cain Arena and Margaret Court Arena are all fitted with a retractable roof, allowing play to continue in rainy or extremely hot conditions as well.

128 players compete in the men’s and women’s singles draw apiece but that’s not where the tournament ends. Some of the other events include:

  • Men’s & Women’s Doubles
  • Mixed Doubles
  • Wheelchair’s Quad, Men’s and Women’s Singles
  • Wheelchair Quad, Men’s & Women’s Doubles
  • Boys’ & Girls’ Singles & Doubles
  • Boys’ & Girls’ Under-14 Singles
  • Invitational Men’s, Women’s & Mixed Doubles

The women’s singles champion earns the big bucks to go with the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup while the men’s singles title winner gets the right to take the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup home.

Novak Djokovic has won 10 singles titles at the Australian Open, the most by any male player while Margaret Court has 11 women’s singles titles to her.

What Happened in the 2024 Edition of Australian Open?

Jannik Sinner clinched the men’s singles title in what turned out to be a surprise victory after he defeated Novak Djokovic in the semifinal in four sets and then came back from being two sets down to overpower Daniil Medvedev in the final.

This was after Medvedev had himself come back from being two love down to Alexander Zverev in his semifinal. Zverev had earlier put an end to Carlos Alcaraz’s stint in the tournament by defeating him in the quarterfinal in a five-setter.

The women’s title was won by Aryna Sabalenka for the second time in a row, as she defeated China’s Qinwen Zheng in straight sets in the final.

Sabalenka had a smooth run through the tournament with the Belarusian not dropping a single set in defending her title. In the third round she double-bagelled Lesia Tsurenko while routing Barbora Krejcikova in the quarterfinals and overcoming Cori Gauff in the semifinals.

Iga Swiatek, who was the top seed, was taken to a third set in the second round by Danielle Collins before Linda Noskova came back from being a set down to end her stay in the competition in the very next match.

Third seeded Elena Rybakina was beaten in a ripper of a second round contest by Anna Blinkova who won the final set tie-breaker 22-20.
