Jacob Fearnley v Joao Fonseca Head to Head
They had faced off earlier this year in the Canberra Challenger where Fonseca had won in straight sets.
Fonseca Coming off Maiden Title Win in Argentina
A little over a year ago, João Fonseca was ranked outside the top 700 in the world. Today, he has already won a title at the ATP level and has broken into the top 100 which will give him a shot at direct qualifications in Grand Slam competitions.
Now while that’s indeed some excellent going by the 18-year-old, Fonseca looks destined for greater things and that was on show when he took to court at both, the Australian Open and Argentina Open.
Fonseca had won the Canberra Challenger title without dropping a set and then clinched three qualifying wins in a row to make it to the main draw of the Australian Open. There he made a lot of waves with a shock, opening round win over Andrey Rublev.
He would then switch over to clay where the Brazilian player would win his maiden ATP-level tournament in Argentina.
On the slightly slower courts here in Indian Wells, Fonseca could be the player to watch out.

Fearnley Hoping to Keep Moving Up
Jacob Fearnley hasn’t been around at the highest level for long with his maiden Challenger title having only come last year. He also won his maiden Grand Slam match at Wimbledon in 2024.
This year, he kick-started his season by featuring at the Canberra Challenger having started the season ranked 99th in the world.
Three weeks on, he had made the semifinals at the event and then won a couple of rounds at the Australian Open to improve upon his best showing at a Grand Slam. One of those came against Nick Kyrgios.
Following that, Fearnley has featured at the Davis Cup and a Challenger event in Pau, winning and losing one at the former and reaching the quarterfinal at the latter.
A wildcard to Reilly Opelka allowed Fearnley to make a direct entry into the competition and he will now look to build on his start to the year.
Fearnley v Fonseca Predictions
Fonseca looks bright and ready to conquer the tennis world and given how he has gone about his business this year we could see some of the best of him starting this tournament. Expect him to beat Fearnley in straight sets.
