Elena Rybakina v Katie Volynets Head to Head
Their only previous meeting came in the 2022 French Open where Rybakina had won in straight sets.
Rybakina Gets Opening Bye
A lot has been going on around Elena Rybakina, whether it’s to do with her fitness or with the issue around her coach.
That may or may not be related to her results but the fact is, as a world number five she would be expected to do a lot better than she has so far this season.
Sure she won three of the four matches she featured in at the United Cup and yes, Rybakina made the fourth round at the Australian Open – no mean achievement – but the Kazakh would be hoping she can up the ante a little.
Especially against the top players – her defeats this season have come against Iga Swiatek and Madison Keys.
What that means is that for now there’re no real worries in this match against a player ranked more than 60 places behind her but all eyes will be on her performance.

Volynets Surprises Kartal
Sonay Kartal had some solid form going into the main draw of this competition and was even the favourite against the experience of Katie Volyets
It was this experience that Volynets used well to overturn the loss of the first set and clinch the win.
Having overcome Daria Saville and another British player in the qualifiers, Volynets used up two hours and 34 minutes to register a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Kartal.
Incidentally, Volynets had kicked off her season rather well with an appearance in the Auckland Open quarterfinal but then faced diminishing returns when she lost three matches in a row – to Alycia Parks in Auckland, Dayana Yastremska in Hobart and Rebecca Sramkova at the Australian Open.
Volynets will now hope to put up a fight against the world number five.
