Jasmine Paolini v Jelena Ostapenko Head to Head
Their only previous meeting at this level came at the 2023 US Open and Ostapenko had won that encounter in three sets. Before that they had also met on the ITF circuit in 2014 in which Paolini had emerged victorious.
Paolini Eases Past Garcia
While Caroline Garcia isn’t at her best anyway, due credit to the manner in which Jasmine Paolini pulled off a straight-set win over her French opponent to make it to the third round.
After getting an opening round bye, Paolini had gone in as a 2/5 favourite in her second round match and played exactly like that.
In a match that did not last even an hour and quarter, Paolini overturned an early break of serve in both the sets to clinch it 6-3, 6-4.
Paolini had earlier featured in the United Cup and won two of her three matches there before making it as far as the third round at the Australian Open.
A finalist at the French Open and Wimbledon last year, Paolini has now won her first match in this tournament and but her ultimate goal would be to go all the way in order to defend some of those points from the previous year’s Grand Slam results.

Ostapenko Showing Signs of Old Self
While defeating Aoi Ito in the first round was par for the course, Jelena Ostapenko would have known she had a task on her hand when she took to court for her second encounter.
It came against Liudmilla Samsonova, who herself might not have been in the greatest touch but is a formidable opponent by any standard.
And it showed in the encounter too as Ostapenko took nearly two hours to earn herself a straight-set win.
In a match that saw the players lose their serve a whopping 11 times in total, it was the opening set tie-breaker and the 11th game of the second set that made all the difference.
Ostapenko raced off to a 5-2 lead in the tie-breaker before winning it off her second set-point while in the second set she shrugged off four shared breaks with Samsonova before finding a way to get past her opponent’s serve in the crucial 11th game.
This was Ostapenko’s third win of the season and the first time this year she has won successive matches in a tournament.
