What Happened in the 2025 Edition of the WTA Doha?
In a surprise result, Amanda Anisimova grabbed her maiden WTA 1000 title win after she overcame Jeļena Ostapenko in the final. She won 6–4, 6–3 to clinch it.
Having entered the tournament as an unseeded player, Anisimova became the first to win it like that in six years. Even more interestingly, in the last 10 years of this competition, this was the first time both the finalists were unseeded players.
Earlier in the tournament, Swiatek was looking to make it to four titles in a row but was ousted in the last four stage by Ostapenko who made it 5-0 on head to head against the Polish superstar.
Top seeded Aryna Sabalenka was dumped by Ekaterina Alexandrova in the very second round.
What Happened in the 2024 Edition of the WTA Doha?
Iga Swiatek made it three titles in a row at the Qatar Open when she lifted the 2024 edition of the competition, beating Elena Rybakina in the final. She won 7-6 (8), 6-2.
The world number one grabbed the competition win without dropping a set, following a first round bye.
She overcame Sorana Cirstea in the second round, crushed Ekaterina Alexandrova in the third, made a mincemeat of Victoria Azarenka in the quarterfinals before getting a bye from Karolina Pliskova in the semifinals.
Second seeded Cori Gauff was bundled out from her very first match, losing to Katerina Siniakova in the second round.
