What Happened in the 2024 Edition of the Indian Wells Open?
Carlos Alcaraz successfully defended his Indian Wells Open title in the men’s draw when he overcame Daniil Medvedev in the final in straight sets. After a fighting opening set, Alcaraz dominated Medvedev in the second to grab the victory 7-6 (5), 6-1.
This was after Novak Djokovic’s return to Indian Wells proved to be a bit of a damp squib as he crashed out of the men’s singles draw in the third round of the competition.
Djokovic lost to Luca Nardi in a hard-fought three-setter after having needed three sets to edge past Aleksandar Vukic in the previous match.
In the women’s section of the draw, Iga Swiatek routed Maria Sakkari in the final, making it her eighth title victory on the WTA 1000 tour. Incidentally, her 6-4, 6-0 victory over Sakkari meant she dropped just 21 games in the entire tournament.
It also meant that the most games Swiatek lost in any match in the competition was four.
Earlier, the second seeded Aryna Sabalenka, who was coming into the tournament on the back of a title win at the Australian Open, was sent packing in the fourth round.
She lost to local Emma Navarro.
Fourth seeded Elena Rybakina withdrew before the tournament because of gastrointestinal issues while the third seed Cori Gauff was shocked by Sakkari in a three-setter in the semifinal.
